The history of blockboards dates back to thousands of years when Egyptians, for the first time, had conceived and made furniture utilising block board for their pyramids. Blockboard, which is also well-known as lumber core, is a kind of engineered wood just similar to plywood having its core made from the uniform strips of softwood.
Blockboards always offer better results than plywood when utilized for making large-sized book shelves or any other pieces of home furniture, particularly where the length of furniture matters. One of the principal reasons behind why these boards are considered to be a better choice for shelves, lies in their composition or the making procedure.
The composition of blockboards is quite different from plywood. Just contrary to plywood, these boards are not made from plies which are glued over one another. The solid rectangular shaped blocks of wood, also called as battens or wooden strips form the core of blockboards. All these wood blocks are almost same in size, and are placed end to end to make the blockboard core. And, in case of plywood, a top and bottom layer of ply is glued over these blocks for the formation of surfaces.
Why blockboards are better than plywood for the making of shelves
Any plywood sheet with considerable length has a natural tendency to sag down in the middle; while on the contrary, blockboards have more stiffness and lesser possibility to sag down. It never means that they are superior to plywood in overall strength. In fact, they are preferred only in those cases where lengthy pieces of engineered wood are to be utilized. Therefore, to make durable and lasting pieces of furniture like lengthy shelves, partitions, benches and wall panels, blockboard for furniture is simply the best choice, that also comes at a cheaper price.
As far as construction is concerned, there are 3 types of blockboards available in the market, i.e. 3-ply, 5-ply and 7-ply. A 3-ply variant is made up of a core which is sandwiched between 2 layers of plies, whereas the remaining 2 variants consist of a core, covered with 2 and 6 layers of plies on each side respectively. The first variant is generally utilized for hidden applications. The second one is preferred to make furniture which calls for decorative quality. The last one is used more in making doors and other lengthy constructions.
